“Jesus,” Kelly said, putting the stolen credit card back in her purse.
Her heart sunk when she saw how pitiful the woman had become. She didn’t know anything about her except, she was Diane’s friend. Still, Kelly tended to mind her business and headed toward the fountain, but the water and the lights didn’t work. She had nothing to distract her from what she observed and knew she must help her, but Kelly had never helped anyone before.
All the restaurants are closed, so she couldn’t even offer the lonely woman anything to eat. She had no idea what to do, but she had to do something. She said a quick prayer, although it seemed worthless because she’d just stolen from her ex-boyfriend. She slowly started walking toward the lady.
“Excuse me,” Kelly said. “Are you okay?”
The lady rose up and looked around the unfamiliar, dark space. Her memory didn’t recall anything. She didn’t even know how she got there.
“Am I dead yet?” Janelle said.
“No.”
“Where are all the robbers and murders when you need them?”
“I know this may be weird, but I want to help you. I got to help you. Where do you stay?”
Janelle looked at her, from the top of her head to the soles of her feet. She turned her lips up in disgust and backed away from Kelly, making her uncomfortable. Kelly thought that this might not have been a great idea, but for some reason she had a determination to help someone in need.
“What happened?” Kelly asked. The question flew out of Kelly’s mouth so effortlessly that she stunned herself. She didn’t expect that question to come out because she couldn’t think of any words to say.
To Kelly’s amazement, Janelle slowly turned around. She wiped the hair out of her face and licked the crust off her peeling lips.
“I lost everything. I lost my only child to a senseless crime, and my husband left me, too,” Janelle said. “So I ran. I ran as far as I could. I hoped the pain would stop chasing me, but then I realized that the pain is inside.”
She unbuttoned her blouse and tried to show Kelly her chest. Kelly held back tears and grabbed Janelle’s hand. She could hear the pain in Janelle’s voice.
“I know how you feel. I lost everybody, too,” Kelly said. “I been running, going all over the place, but I know I can’t keep running because it only makes it worse.”
Kelly ministered to herself as well. She knew exactly how this woman felt. It might not have been as bad, but Kelly knew she faced the same predicament. Living life unstable, because the one place you called home hurt so much that it would kill you to return.
“You know who can mend your broken heart?” Kelly said. “Jesus. I promise you if you lift your hands and call on Jesus then He will come and save you.”
Kelly didn’t know what she said. Something dwindled down and took over her mind and body. She touched Janelle’s chest and she began to weep.
